Position Statement on a nuclear submarine development on the Lefevre Peninsula
The Port Environment Centre (PEC) is a community driven organisation and ‘gathering place’ that supports the community in living sustainably, valuing, caring for, learning about and enjoying the experience of the natural coastal, marine and estuarine environment.
The Lefevre Peninsula is the heart of the PEC. It is a unique piece of land much loved by residents and visitors for its stunning beaches, sand dune system, coastal and river walks, working harbour, historic buildings and great café vibe. The Peninsula hosts vibrant community groups for singing, art, conservation, environmental protection, dolphin and bird watching, sailing, walking, bicycling and more. It is a close-knit community which is inspired by the sea, coast and river and in return the community stands strong together to protect the environment.
The community has a long history of living with industry on the Peninsula and has for many years been watching and reporting when there are impacts to the environment.
The Management Committee of the PEC are concerned about the proposed establishment of a nuclear submarine facility on the Port River and Lefevre Peninsula and the risk it poses to the surrounding environment. The location is within a marine park, the Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary, which has a resident population of dolphins, ancient mangroves and seagrass meadows providing habitat for marine creatures. The location also borders the Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary and Mutton Cove Conservation Park. The Port River Estuary has active oyster restoration and living shoreline projects working to safeguard and improve the biodiversity of the Port River.
We seek a transparent, consultative process, with accurate and timely information provided, that respects the community’s concerns about protecting our local environment.
